FAIR BREAK Join thousands of people around the globe for the worlds's largest fair trade coffee day Saturday. Breha Patterson, manager of Studio West Cafe, is participating in the international event at 3 p.m. at the West Street eatery. Studio West Cafe serves only fair trade coffee and desserts. The event is held in conjunction with World Fair Trade Day, May 10.
MUSIC MONDAY Music Monday found Kathaleen McNeil's music students at Beamsville District Secondary School tuning up with students from 1,600 schools to celebrate nationwide the importance of music education in the schools. BDSS students performed during an afternoon concert for Grades 4-6 Senator Gibson students. The city decided to invest about $20,000 into its website during this year's budget process. Port Colborne Mayor Vance Badawey said he hopes to have the website completely redesigned by mid-year.
SHELL SLINGER Ella Marr, who turns two in July, was having a blast tossing seashells back into Lake Erie with mom Alison. The Fonthill residents were walking along the shoreline by Lakeshore Road Monday while visiting family.
A ROARING GOOD DONATION The Lions and Lioness clubs of Welland presented cheques for $500 each to help the Woodlands of Sunset purchase a bench to go with its planned outdoor gazebo. Henry Beida rides an ATV on his 88-acre property on Foss Road. The ATV enthusiast wants Niagara ATV riders to join forces and start a club so riders don't become a nuisance to the rest of the public.
DUTY CALLS Fort Erie resident Captain Bruce Mair receives orders during a cordon and search operation while participating in Exercise Maple Storm I at Land Force Central Area Training Centre Meaford (LFCA TC Meaford) April 18-20. A constable with the Niagara Regional Police Service, Capt. Mair is also a part-time reservist with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. Maple Storm I is an annual exercise which involves all units within 31 Canadian Brigade Group, the army in Southwestern Ontario. It is designed to enhance core soldier skills used on domestic and overseas operations.

IN HONOUR OF MULLINS Carolyn Mullins, left, unveils a portrait of her late husband, Jeff, with David Bird, chief executive officer of the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital prior to a board meeting on April 30. Jeff was a former chair of the hospital board and a two-term Grimsby alderman who died unexpectedly in January. His portrait will hang on the wall in the hospital boardroom.
