BEST ROSE Janey Burns enjoys the fragrance of the flower that was named best rose in the 55th annual Niagara Falls Horticultural Society Rose and Flower Show, held June 12 at the Niagara Falls Public Library on Victoria Avenue. Burns' son-in-law, Marty Hammond, grew the award-winning rose.

Rene Landry, drainage superintendant for the city of Port Colborne, reacted quickly when he was informed by the Ministry of the Environment that an oily substance had been dumped into a municipal drain along Neff Road. 185834 CASHING IN

CASHING IN Dustin, left, and Cody Berry, right, presented a cheque for $7,200 to Ashley Legget of Hamilton recently. The money was raised at Dustin's fundraiser birthday party at the Peach King Centre in April. The cheque is part of Celebration 2008 at McMaster and is being accepted by Cassie from Disney's 'Life with Derek'. Celebration 2008 raised almost $6-million for Mac. Thanks to the 300 people who attended Dustin's party and contributed the funds to a great cause. 185845 CANAL CASTING

COOKING UP CASH FOR JONATHAN Dante Ciccone (left), Mayor Vance Badawey and Coun. Gary Bruno (second from right and far right) were grilling up some funds last Thursday, June 12, for Port Colborne resident Jonathan Hintenberger. They were joined by Alicia Hintenberger, Jonathan's wife, and Ben Tarabalka, owner of Ben and Jenny's No Frill which donated the food for the barbecue. Hintenberger is battling his fourth bout of leukemia and turned to naturopathic medicine after doctors gave him little hope. A Saving Jonathan Benefit has been planned for July 5 at the Ukrainian Black Sea Hall on Welland Avenue in St. Catharines. Tickets to the stag and doe style fundraiser are $5 and can be purchased at Erie Muffler and Brake, Niagara Shoe Factory Outlet or by calling 905-834-2166. All funds will go towards Jonathan's medical treatments which costs upwards of $1,600 a month. 185836 COOL SHIRT

LAKEVIEW CLEANS UP Lakeview Public School students spent Earth Day cleaning up arond the community, covering about 15 streets and three parks in Grimsby. By the end of the two-hour cleanup, classes had collected more than 15 bags of garbage.
