Real estate broker helping Habitat for Humanity
Business
Jul 02, 2008
A local real estate broker is trying his hand at building homes for a change.

Sort of.

What Paul Lalama, a broker with RE/MAX St. Catharines, is doing is donating a portion of his commission on home sales over the next few months to Habitat for Humanity Niagara. On all homes sold between July 17 to Sept. 17, Lalama will give the organization three per cent of his profit on a home sale. This means, on a home sold for $200,000, Habitat for Humanity will receive $150.

The organization, through local partnerships, builds affordable homes for families. Each home costs the organization about $60,000, with the rest being made up from in-kind donations. The new homeowners pay for the homes through what is called "sweat equity" -- by volunteering their time with Habitat for Humanity to build another home or by working with another community organization.

Currently, there are five homes being built across Niagara, two each in Welland and Fort Erie that are nearly finished and one in Port Colborne that is set to be done in August.

"I think it's a great thing that they're doing," Lalama said of his decision.

"Hopefully I can sell a lot of homes and make them a lot of money."
