Lion's carnival finds a new home

The Fort Erie Lions Club's carnival is back and promises to be better than ever.

This year the event will be held from May 15 to 19 on Garrison Road in the parking lot of Victory Christian Centre International, formerly Delta Bingo.

For the past three years, the carnival was held at the Fort Erie Race Track, but partners agreed to give Garrison Road a try this year.

"Crown Amusements felt Garrison Road would be better noticed," said Charles McMillen, carnival committee co-chair.

The carnival is a major fundraiser for the service club, whose revenue has taken a hit because of falling bingo profits.

"Years ago the carnival was the main fundraiser (for the club) in the summer. It was held on the corner of Central and Wintemute and in Oakes park. And for a number of years there was no carnival," said McMillen.

Six years ago the carnival was resurrected and since then, it has been held annually on the May long weekend.

"We pray for good weather," said McMillen.

McMillen said the carnival dates back at least 50 years and was halted because the club was able to find other ways to raise money, particularly through bingo.

For the first time, Lions members will serve carnival food, including bacon on a bun.

Money raised will assist in programs for the blind and locally, the Lions support numerous initiatives including scholarships.

"All the money raised goes right back into the community and as well to help people with vision problems throughout the world," said McMillen.

Victory Christian Centre International is located at 549 Garrison Rd.
