Residents want Rosehill Auction to clean up act

Residents in the area of the Rosehill Auction House aren't opposed to the business expanding as long as the area is kept clean, Pound Avenue homeowner Donna Graham says.

"I just want them to be a respectful neighbour and consider those of us living in the area," she said to council during a public meeting to consider the popular retailer's application for a zoning amendment to permit an expansion.

The Garrison Road property is currently being used as an auction house, retail store and an appliance refurbishment/dismantling/repair shop. Owner Jean Passero wants to invest about $3 million in a new 32,000 square-foot addition, of outdoor storage, additional parking spaces and the purchase of Rosehill Road north of Garrison to facilitate the expansion.

Graham said Rosehill employees worked hard to clean up the property in preparation for tours by council and town staff.

Graham said loaders and truck drivers proceed up and down Pound Avenue "as if it's their own private thoroughfare" and dust created by day-to-day activities is almost unbearable.

"It's absolutely filthy in the springtime. We couldn't allow our garbage to blow all over the neighbourhood -- someone would complain," said Graham.

Tom Smart, a planner for BLS Planning Associates who was representing Passero, acceded the site is cleaner than in times past and said the new site plan developed after a meeting with eight residents will resolve concerns raised and provide work for 10 to 15 new employees.

Three residents spoke in favour of the expansion while Graham and another two spoke against.

Council received staff's report for information and on June 9 will be presented recommendations about Rosehill Road in a report from the land committee meeting. If the zoning amendment is approved, Smart said the first phase of the expansion would begin immediately with the second following a year later.
