Fire department, online pool close to $5,000 goal
Grimsby
May 16, 2008
The Grimsby Fire Department is one step away from receiving funding for a special Fortuna floatation rescue raft.

Thanks to the support of Dave Winckler, operator of NASCAR pool website tracksidepools.com, the department has received $4,560 of a $5,000 pledge to help them purchase the craft. A recent party, held at Welland Boston Pizza, raised $600 for the cause, as well as $330 for local riders in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

"We're one step away and should reach our goal at our party in September," said Winckler, referring to a party planned for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Boston Pizza in Grimsby.

Over the past two years Winckler has been raising funds through parties at Boston Pizza locations in Grimsby and Welland. The parties are free to attend, but Winckler raffles off major door prizes in support of the charitable causes.

"This is a really important piece of equipment that will make an incredible difference when it comes to water rescue situations in our community," said Fire Chief Chris Halliday.

Winckler said he couldn't have done it without the support of the community, the Boston Pizza locations as well as a number of sponsors and other supporters He would specifically like to thank Boston Pizza, www.jjyeley.com, Jimmie Johnson Foundation, Pneuair Compressors, www.melissatry.com and Battlefield Advertising.

This fall, he said, an October party will be used to support any other local organizations looking for a boost. He encourages any groups who have a project they are working towards to e-mail him at dave@tracksidepools.com.
