After a long career with Pen West Utilities, Karen Bubish is going off the grid, trading in all her banked kilowatt hours for a fresh start on the golf greens.
The 59-year-old retired from her post Friday, June 27, after nearly 25 years in the utility industry. Bubish had spent time with Ontario Hydro, Lincoln Hydro, and most recently Pen West Utilities - now Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc.
Over those years, she held many management titles, finishing as Chief Operating Officer of Pen West and VP of Corporate Services of NPEI.
From this point forward, her days will be filled with less wires and wattage, and more tee times and trips to Florida.
"I won't miss the work," she said during an open house at the Beamsville office. "But I will miss all the great people I've met from across Ontario."
When Bubish recovered from breast cancer a few years ago, she said it put a whole new perspective on her life.
Brian Wilkie, CEO of NPEI, gave her a residential electric meter, circa 1920, memento for all her hard work over the years.
"That's when Karen started," he joked, before wishing her all of the best.
"We'll miss her, but we're a strong company that will move ahead," he said.
