Bats from all over Ontario will flutter into Ball's Falls Conservation Area this week.

The Listen to the Night: Bats of Ontario travelling exhibit from the Royal Ontario Museum opens in the Centre for Conservation on September 6 and runs until November 2.

"The exhibit talks a bit about the myths people have about bats and tries to dispel some of them, and shows how bats are beneficial to humans," said Andrea Wilson, the centre's program assistant, in a recent interview with Niagara this Week.

Every Saturday during the exhibit, the area will be having activities and crafts throughout the day.

For example, on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 9:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., the centre will host a 15-minute echolocation demonstration. The demonstration will look at the system that bats use to navigate and find food. They give off high pitched sounds, then interpret the echoes

This is followed by storytime, with a reading of Stellaluna for the little ones. The children's book is about a fictional female fruit bat penned by author Jannell Cannon.

For those interested in arts and crafts there will be an activity centre that has bat crafts, puzzles and games to play and take away.

During the eight-week exhibit, Ball's Falls will also offer education programs for schools, daycares, Brownies, Sparks, Cubs, Scouts and environmental groups. These programs are geared to the age level and are full of hands-on activities.

"The more you know about your natural world, the more you are predisposed to protect and care for it," said Wilson.

The exhibit runs daily at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Sept. 6 to Nov. 2 at the centre, which is located at Balls Falls, 3292 Sixth Ave. Admission is $5.50 an adult and $4 a child.
