The new school year opened on a high note for students at Beamsville District Secondary School.

The school's Instrumental Music program will benefit from a $10,000 grant from MusiCounts, Canada's music education charity.

News of the grant was music to instructor Kathaleen McNeil's ears.

"This money will allow us to replace some of our older instruments with ones capable of performing at the level our students do," McNeil said.

The grant funds will be used to purchase new clarinets, trumpets and oboes for the program.

"Instruments can be extremely expensive, so instead of focusing on one or two big ticket items, we want to make sure this grant benefits as many students as possible," she said.

Principal Mike Jenken said the school is "very appreciative" of the funding, and said students will display their prowess on the new instruments during the 27th annual Turkey Dinner for parents and the community in December.

"Music education plays an important role in the curriculum," he said. "It enhances cognitive development and provides students with a creative outlet to express themselves with."

MusiCounts, formerly known as MusiCan, is dedicated to ensuring that young Canadians, regardless of background or socio-economic circumstances, have the opportunity to experience the joy of music, explore their talent and build self-esteem.

In total, MusiCounts is providing 68 schools across Canada with a combined total of $600,000 in grants this year.
