Janice Thomson thinks that sometimes there are great opportunities that come and one must take advantage and make it happen.
In Niagara-on-the-Lake's case, Thomson, the executive director of the NOTL Chamber of Commerce, refers to the Canadian Jazz Hall of Fame, which she said has a perfect home for it in the Market Room at the Court House.
Thomson told council Monday night at town hall that she was first approached about the concept by John Armstrong of OEB International last year.
Thomson said the town would be a perfect location for the hall of fame because NOTL is already home to several jazz-related concerts, such as the Hillebrand Jazz festival and various live concerts at Jackson Triggs and other venues.
"Jazz seems like a natural fit for Niagara-on-the-Lake," Thomson said. "I have spoken with several jazz musicians and they embraced the idea warmly.
"We (the town) are a great ground of music neutrality. We have a space in the chamber office that we can devote to the hall of fame. We thought about having it in our Market Room."
Thomson said the hall of fame would be paid for by corporate sponsors, have audio and visual treatments on the wall, and possibly musician Oscar Peterson's piano.
Thomson said she hopes to have the hall of fame up and running by January's Icewine Festival and is looking for council support to help maintain it.
"We will need some form of security," Thomson said.
During discussion on the hall of fame, Coun. Jim Collard said because the Market Room has heritage value, Thomson might want to run the idea by the Municipal Heritage Committee before anything is constructed.
Coun. Art Viola said the Market Room is seldom used by the community so it would be a perfect location in addition to generating an attraction in town.
"I think it's a good idea," Viola said.
