As thousands of Brock University students line up to receive their parking passes for this academic year, they'll also receive a sobering reminder that Niagara has one of the highest per capita rates of fatal and serious motor vehicle crashes in Ontario.

The university has teamed up with the Regional Niagara Road Safety Committee to promote the Think and Drive road safety campaign during parking pass pickup. Think and Drive printed material will be handed out with parking permits and a table top display will be set up outside the office of parking services.

Representatives from Brock campus security and the Think and Drive campaign were also at the university last week to speak with faculty and students about the campaign.

Karl Thorp, a special constable with Brock security, said the parking pass pickup was an ideal time to drive home the point of road safety.

The campaign is a joint project of Niagara's regional government, CAA Niagara and Niagara Regional Police.

Nicole Rusling, health promoter with the region's public health department, said the campaign -- designed to change driver attitudes in Niagara and to convince drivers to avoid distractions that can lead to serious crashes -- is all about getting motorists to take "personal responsibility" for road safety.

In total, about 17,000 parking passes will be issued by Brock.
