The appetite for food produced locally appears to be growing.

Brock's Community Farmers Market, a once-a-week pilot project through the summer that opened June 13, is gaining in popularity, both in the number of vendors and shoppers.

Presented as the "Twelve Days of Summer" by the university's Community and Ancillary Services, the market, which features produce from farmers in Niagara, is slated to run until Aug. 29.

But Kristen Smith, community services co-ordinator at Brock, said it would be ideal if the market ran year-round. It could, she said, if it proves to be popular enough.

"It would be great to expose students to that," she said.

Initially, most of the visitors to the market, located outside in Jubilee Court just east of the Schmon tower, were Brock staff and people who work close by. Now people are coming from all across the city, she said, including families with their children out of school.

Laura Kozloski, owner of The Organic General Store in Niagara-on-the-Lake, set up a booth at the market for the first time on Friday after being told about it.

"It's fabulous," she said, adding that local growers need as many opportunities as they can to reach consumers.

"I would like to see this get even bigger and better," she said.

The market will run every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the next nine weeks.
