Making the decision to step inside a gym for the first time can be a difficult one for anyone.
There are rows upon rows of equipment, some of it familiar or at least intuitive, some of it puzzling. Using the equipment, it seems, are people who have spent half their lives in the gym; they're not getting in shape so much as keeping their shape, and they know exactly what they're doing and how to use the various fitness machines.
As uncomfortable as the experience can be for the general population, for seniors it can be intimidating.
For this reason, two trainers have started a service offering classes for people they refer to as baby boomers and beyond. It is run by Al Josselyn, who is 50 and has been a trainer for the past 30 years, and Melissa McGarry, his former student whose enthusiasm for healthy lifestyles has led her to a teaching role.
McGarry said when she first went to a gym, it was important to her that the trainer knew where she was coming from.
"I wanted somebody who would relate to my age, relate to some of my experiences," she said.
Josselyn said it's a common refrain.
"For the 50-year-old who is starting training, he does not feel comfortable with a trainer who is 22 years old," he said.
This Sunday afternoon, from 1-6 p.m., the duo will be holding an open house party, complete with a barbecue and entertainment, at Bodymax Fitness and Wellness Studio, a gym where they are affiliate trainers. There will also be demonstrations in the personal training they offer, as well as fitness classes and kick boxing.
Bodymax is located at 300 Bunting Rd. For more information, call 905-324-5366 or 905-246-2204.
