When Jerry Munsie was diagnosed with cancer, he had a vision to support the cause.
The owner of DMZ Paintball wanted to hold a massive charity paintball tournament with all proceeds going towards the Canadian Cancer Society.
After Munsie lost his battle to lymphoma in May, employees at DMZ Paintball and Laser Tag knew they had to pick up where Munsie left off.
"Jerry was a great guy and he had every intention of holding a game this year so we are finishing what he started, said store employee Rob Thibault.
"We all haven't had time to deal with his death in the short term because we've been busy with the store, but in the long term it will certainly take some time.
"I hope this tournament helps with that.
This Sunday, DMZ Paintball and Lasertag will host the first ever Jerry Munsie Charity Paintball Tournament at their Thorold playing field.
Thibault said he's expecting a big crowd.
"The response has been staggering," said Thibault. "We're expecting 200 players and we're hoping for at least 400."
Thibault said there have been over 1,000 hits on the company's website forum since the game was announced.
"A lot of people are looking forward to it," he said.
The tournament is turning to the Red vs. Blue series from Halo as the theme of the tournament in honour of Munsie, who was a big fan of the video game.
Players will be split into a red team and a blue team on the 14 acres of playing field in the largest game DMZ has ever organized.
Their biggest game in the past had 193 players.
There will be 18 missions to earn points during the charity game.
The winning team will get their photo taken with the Jerry Munsie Memorial Cup which will be put on display at the DMZ store on St. Paul and Geneva streets in St. Catharines.
Players wishing to get involved will also be able to purchase paint for $100 a case, $60 less than the regular price.
Thibault said he hopes the game can turn into an annual event.
"If all goes well we will continue doing this," said Thibault.
The game will be held on the DMZ field in Thorold off of Townline Road, on Sunday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
