Volunteer firefighters nearly at full strength

Membership of Wainfleet's volunteer fire department is almost where Fire Chief Chris Cole would like it to be.

As a result of a recruitment exercise earlier this year, when Cole sent letters to Wainfleet residents advising them of the firefighter shortage, Cole was almost able to double the amount of firefighters.

And, most importantly, Cole was able to increase levels in under-serviced areas like the lakeshore and north end of town.

But Cole said he isn't quite satisfied -- he'd like to add five more firefighters to his fleet of 45.

"That's the level I feel manpower should be," said Cole. "Not only for safety, but to meet provincial guidelines."

Cole plans to start another recruitment drive in the fall and while he will accept resumes from across the township, he is still focusing on the north end and lakeshore areas for new volunteers.

In the past year 17 volunteers were added to the firefighter complement. Those 17 new members are still on probation, but Cole said he is pleased with their work.

Advertising for the volunteer firefighter positions will be posted in September or October.
