Despite some residents' beliefs that the incessant rain this summer has helped with the problems surrounding Long Beach in Wainfleet, Shane Ball still sees an ongoing problem.
"It got better at the beginning of the season," said Ball, a member of the Long Beach Homeowners Association. "But there is still a lot of public urinating."
The Safe Beaches initiative was implemented in the spring in an attempt to combat issues of vandalism, underage drinking, littering and illegal parking at Long Beach. The plan was developed by Niagara police, the Long Beach Homeowners Association and the Wainfleet Township.
Ball said he believes that the township isn't willing to participate fully in the initiative and is only concerned with the Augustine Road allowance, which provides an access point to the beach.
"They just want to maintain the road," said Ball. "They don't deal with the garbage. There's a sanitation problem."
Ball said that suggestions have been made to close down Long Beach and allow people to visit Long Beach Conservation Park which has facilities and ample space for parking.
He said on a hot summer's day there can be up to 1,000 people on the beach and there are no bathrooms. Another issue is the lack of parking.
"They put 'no parking' signs on one side of the road," said Ball, "so people park on the other side."
Janine Farnell, who works at Kay's on Lakeshore Road, agreed with Ball, saying that it's not only an issue of underage drinking, it's the lack of facilities that annoys most people.
However, she said, this year hasn't been as bad as previous ones, citing the number of rainy days as a possible factor.
