A 26-year-old Smithville man is dead, following a rollover in West Lincoln last Sunday.
The victim, whose name has not been released by Niagara Regional Police, was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday night, on Twenty Road at Regional Road 14.
Police and emergency services personnel were called to the scene of the accident at about 11:20 p.m. Initial investigation, said police, reveals the victim was the lone occupant of his 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and was travelling westbound on Regional Road 14 -- also known as Smithville Road.
Police say at the intersection of Twenty Road, the vehicle failed to stop for the three-way stop and continued westbound on to Twenty Road. The Pontiac, police said, left the south side of the roadway and struck a wooden fence. The vehicle then continued to travel in a southwesterly direction through a field, colliding with a second wooden fence.
Police say the vehicle then rolled, ejecting the driver from the vehicle. The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene and his identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Police say excessive speed was a factor in the collision.
The Niagara Regional Police's Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the incident. Any witnesses are requested to contact investigators by calling 905-945-2211, ext. 5500.
