Craitor's comments nonsense
Letters
May 09, 2008
MPP Kim Craitor's recent comments about the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative are propelling a nonsensical myth that the Canadian Government has the authority to refute U.S. Congress law regarding securing the border by mandating passports.

Resistance to this initiative stems mainly from the cost of obtaining passports. However, is this not a fair exchange for security? For the price of a tank of gas, officers will now be able to more efficiently and consistently scan names with passports instead of typing, which not only increases security but speeds up wait times. Detailed training on spotting fake passports is more viable, versus learning the intricacies of thousands of variants of documents. Mr. Craitor states, "It's a sad state when American's can't even trust their neighbours to the North."

Mr. Craitor should be made aware that no proof of citizenship is required to obtain driver's licenses and many other forms of "identification." Criminals, terrorists, and organized crime take advantage of our naïve "peaceful border" regularly.

Examples of abuse of the lax document requirements are simply too numerous to mention, but some recent highly publicized instances include the arrest of the FBI's top 10 "most wanted" fugitive child molester Steve Goldberg, living under another name with a Quebec driver's license. It's about time Mr. Craitor stopped perpetuating nonsense about the Canadian government averting U.S. federal law, and start understanding how heavily the benefits outweigh the costs.
