Disgracefully, Zimbabwe is ruled by selfish men and endangered by political violence. It's obvious now that there'll be no peace until there's an unexpected, possibly brutal removal of Mugabe. For the moment though, Mugabe is thriving, his crooks securely in control. Our hope for change has sought refuge at a Dutch embassy, how outrageous is that? Like many of us refugees here in Canada, Morgan Tsvangirai too is watching people and the country slowly die and decay in front of his eyes. This is such a sad time for all humanity.
Zimbabwe has truly become a country to shun. From the distance of Niagara Falls, I've watched machete-wielding mobs on CBC TV. Read heartbreaking news briefs of people being beaten, maimed and killed with vicious disregard. My heart pounds at each moment because I can't help fear for the safety of people, my own father, my brother who are trapped there and have not been seen or heard from in months. I can't help but contrast the situation to Kenya's recent string of violence, the beginning of Rwanda's genocide or even Idi Amin's reign of terror. I'm left to imagine the impact this has on countless generations, to us refugees here in Ontario. What are we to do with such uncivilized violence reflected in our eyes?
We live in a treacherous time. I am, however, grateful that I'm here in Canada sheltered from the disgrace and disorder that is today Zimbabwe.
