Reading creates inspiration for varied entrepreneurs

A question was asked at the end of last week's column that had discussed how Dr. Norman Vincent Peale's inspirational writings had a huge impact on the entrepreneurial world.

The question asked for a book that inspired you and why.

The responses were as varied as most things with entrepreneurs. There is no secret sauce for entrepreneurial success.

There are many ways of getting to point B and the key is finding one that you believe in and sticking to it.

The responses about inspirational books were the same as they had read the book many times, went back to it when they needed direction or inspiration and often quoted from it.

A favorite was "Good to Great" by Jim Collins, which shows how a good company can take it to the next level and become great. Entrepreneurs also related to the 'Level 5' Leader that Collins finds is vital to all great companies.

An oldie but goodie was Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People." There were many inspiring stories of how treating people with dignity and respect opened so many doors for them. How listening instead of speaking all the time increased their sales. And how a person's name is the sweetest sound in any language.

Entrepreneurs found great inspiration from the children's book (but who said is what was just for children?) "The Little Engine that Could." This simple story gave hope to many that success is often over the next hill, but it takes courage, faith, persistence and belief in yourself to continue down the track.

There were a host of other great books that I will share with you next week. In addition, the most asked question was 'what was my most inspirational book?' I will share that with you as well.

Please continue to send your responses to "what book inspired you and why?"
