NOTL artist finds second niche

There's nothing but evolution in the career of Niagara-on-the-Lake artist Patricia Paquin.

In the last year Paquin has seen an expanded audience with her art work finding homes everywhere from British Columbia to Quebec. People seem to have taken a liking to the various flower pots, vases, cups, platters and candle holders that Paquin has painted with the likeness of human faces, she said.

Expanding her repertoire, Paquin has also stepped back from her face-adorned art to a more traditional subject -- florals.

"I've been painting a lot of florals," she said. "It's like my second niche. I've painted a lot of flowers with watercolours."

Born in Burlington, Paquin spent much of her life in British Columbia where she worked and lived on a boat six months a year working as an oyster cultivator at a marina.

Moving back to Ontario 19 years ago, Paquin began painting as a hobby and displayed her work, then Christmas themed, at a restaurant to positive reviews.

That's when Paquin said she decided to make art her full time passion.

A few of Paquin's face-themed art and florals will be featured at the 22nd annual Pelham Art Festival, starting today, May 9 and continuing throughout the weekend. The festival will showcase the original works of more than 80 artists from Ontario, Quebec and the United States. A fundraiser, the Pelham Art Festival has previously raised more than $260,000 for Pelham library and community art projects.

It will be Paquin's sixth year at the show.

"I had fun last year and I met a lot of people," Paquin said.
