Best-selling author Brad King educated an audience of about 100 about health while raising money for a prevention-based cancer group.
King's parents both died of cancer and he chooses to support only those organizations that aim to prevent cancer as opposed to cure it.
Breast Cancer Prevention and Community Research collected $580 to benefit the organization's upcoming website, which will be available for prevention strategies and breast health in September.
King's talk at White Oaks on May 5 included topics such as living longer, metabolism and sex drive just to name a few.
He said the main reason why our bodies are storing so much fat is because we eat foods that increase our insulin levels. In order to lower fat levels, King recommends eating fibre and protein to maintain muscle mass and live longer.
You may have heard your mother tell you to get lots of sleep, and King reinforces the same advice. He said that the one-third of your life you spend sleeping directly impacts the other two-thirds of your life.
One of King's readers, Sandy Brunette, said she had had been following King's way of life for the past eight years. She said that it has helped her to maintain her own weight.
"It keeps my mind focused on what I should be doing, the do's and don'ts," she said.
