After a successful first weekend, the Niagara West Invitational Soccer Tournament will wrap up this weekend.

About 500 teams are participating in this year's tournament, with the majority participating in the boys' tournament last weekend. Now more than 200 girls teams will be hitting the fields across Niagara for the final weekend of the tournament, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Michael Philpott, past-president of the Lincoln Soccer Club, said the first weekend was a great start.

"Other than the rain and the wind, we had a very good weekend. It was very successful," said Philpott.

The level of competition last weekend, he said, was high. This weekend that will continue when the girls take to the field. There are a number of local teams this weekend, including Lincoln entries in the Under-18, Under-15 and Under-14 divisions. The Under-18 Grimsby Wrath are expected to be competitive this weekend, as well.

Philpott said in addition to the play on the field, the tournament is a great boost to Lincoln.

"It's not only a major fundraiser for Lincoln Soccer Club, but it's an excellent way to introduce people to the Niagara Region. They have to stay somewhere, eat somewhere and likely they'll shop somewhere. It's good for the economy."
