Land Care Niagara and Windmill Point Park plan to get children Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs, this weekend.

The 11th annual alcohol and drug-free event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Windmill Point Park in Ridgeway. Participants, young and old, will learn about sport fishing, conservation and drug prevention, said Laura Prusinski of Windmill Point Park.

"Everything is geared toward conservation and being environmentally friendly. We're taking kids' minds off sitting at home and playing video games and away from the abundance of drugs and alcohol available," she said. "They get out in the fresh air and mingle with mom and dad, family and friends and have a good time."

The event originated 11 years ago after members of Landcare Niagara suggested the popular American program would benefit area residents as well. The program was inspired in the United States by a young boy who took up fishing as an alternative to drugs.

The event has seen up to 1,500 participants from across the region and the border at the two-day event, which is held annually on Mother's Day weekend. The first 100 mothers who arrive Sunday will receive a special gift. Prizes for the kids will be drawn hourly.

"It's Mother's day and sometimes mom wants to be left alone and sometimes mom wants to come fishing and participate. If it's raining, we get the true diehards who come out and if it's sunny it will be really busy," she said.

The quarry will be stocked with rainbow trout. Anglers may also find bass, perch and carp at the end of their lines.

In addition to great fishing, there will also be hayrides, prizes and scavenger hunts. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase both days. Fishing licences aren't required.

Niagara Regional Police will drop a line or two with participants, as well as set up displays about drug and alcohol awareness.

"Seeing the smiles on (the children's) faces and their excitement ... they come back year after year because they can't wait to go fishing.

And parents are happy they don't have to dig in their pockets to pay for anything."

Participants can release the fish or bring it home. A place to store the fish will be provided in addition to fishing gear.

"They can bring their own (equipment) or if they don't have it they can use our fishing rods and life jackets," said Prusinski. "Everything is completely free."

The event, which marks the beginning of the camping season at the park, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. Windmill Point Park is located at 2409 Dominion Rd., Ridgeway. For more, visit www.windmillpointpark.com or call the park at 905-894-2809.
