Ridden by Wainfleet's Kati Vrbicek, Big V Farm's Rocky won the four-year-old Canadian Jumper Development Series (CJDS) class at the Cornerstone National Hunter Jumper Show held at Hendervale Equestrian Complex in Milton June 20.
Rocky is a Canadian Sport Horse stallion, bred, owned, and trained by Ivan Vrbicek of Big V Farm in Wainfleet and ridden by his daughter Kati.
Rocky is following in his father's footsteps. His sire, Rio's Shadow, won two classes at the Fox Run National Hunter Jumper Show in May 2008.
The (CJDS) is a multi-province, multi-event competition, culminating with the championships in September.
The purpose of the series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent. Horses must be pre-registered for the CJDS and their registration papers recognized by the World Breeding Federation. The horses are scrutinized by two judges, one scoring performance and the other style.
The performance score is based on the horses' ability to complete the course without knocking down a fence or refusing a fence within a limited amount of time.
The style score is based on the horses' ridability and potential to become a Grand Prix horse. Rocky received 50 out of 50 in the performance phase and 41 out of 50 on his style for a total of 91 out of 100.
The course, designed by former Canadian Equestrian team member Danny Foster, who designs courses at many of North America's top show jumping events, proved to be difficult.
While most horses struggled, four horses were eliminated, Rocky was focused, relaxed and handled the course with ease.
Trouble on the course for the majority of the competitors occurred at fences 6a and 6b coming off the big hill and the final combination by the Devil's Dyke.
