Two girls from St. Catharines are nervous, but absolutely thrilled to be competing in the Ontario Summer Games in Ottawa this week.
Katlyn Dundas, 14, is riding for the St. Catharines team and Jessica Tripp, 14, gears up for the Hamilton squad.
Each race is held at Camp Fortune, 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa. The girls will ride in three different races from a time trial of 4k, a team relay of 4k (each) and a cross-country race of 10k.
The girls are grinding it out for the medals awarded to the top three teams and for individual placing.
"It's a great opportunity to taste elite competition and to compete with boys," said Jenny Brown, their hometown coach. "Since it's a male-dominated sport. It's great to have such a young female interest in cycling."
Brown coaches both girls through her Bikefit Sunflower squad, a large women's cycling organization in Niagara.
"I try to push them to another level and provide them with a competitive atmosphere," Brown said. "They are both inspired to compete in the Olympics some day."
Each squad in the Ontario Summer Games must have a female cyclist. The St. Catharines team is made up of Katlyn, Ben Perry, Matt Hopkins and Brandon Etzl.
The Games, a multi-sport annual event, aims to showcase Ontario's best athletes age 11-22 years old. The Games end Saturday.
