The St. Catharines Rowing Club cleaned up at the 126th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.

The SCRC captured a total of 16 gold medals over the six-day event held on Martindale Pond in Port Dalhousie -- the next closest club was Kingston, with five medals.

With 131 countries in the regatta, competing for gold wouldn't be easy. The SCRC decided to take a winning attitude into the regatta.

"Our strategy was to just plow through everybody," said Emma Sheehan, one of eight rowers onboard the senior B lightweight women's four team, which captured gold on the Friday of the event.

That golden crew also included Charlotte Brown, Alex Meikeljohn and Kate Nay.

Earlier, just as Kelly Enslie and Karen Wiley of SCRC women's senior lightweight pair were being awarded gold medals, the senior 64-kilogram men's four boat consisting of coxswain Steven Cooka, Brad Vanoosten, Russell Mckean, John Letwin and Graham Schenck crossed the finish line first to claim more gold for St. Catharines.

When the junior B men's eight of Tommy Willis, Bobby Fair, David Jenkins, Greg Principi, Peter Tonellato, Daniel Corso, Aidan Zmenak and Rhys Coletto won their medals, they celebrated by lifting up coxswain Meagan Anstruther and tossing her into the water, in the spirit of tradition.

"We owe everything to our coach (Josh Carr)," said Willis. "We love him. We spend four hours a day, every day with him. He's why we won."

On Saturday the men's lightweight eight dash was won by coxswain Katie Chapman, Daniel Downie, Travis King, Tyler Page, Jacob Cushnie, Brendan Coffey, Alex Doan, Sylas and Dylan Coletto.
